Many of us have the privilege of caring for our dogs through every stage of life. One challenge that comes with this is that our dogs age much more quickly than we do. Caring for a senior dog often requires extra attention and adjustments to ensure they remain comfortable, healthy, and happy.
Recently, Dr. Brittany became certified through the Senior Dog Veterinary Society, furthering her dedication to senior pet wellness. The Senior Dog Veterinary Society's mission is to help veterinarians and veterinary professionals advance the care and experience of their older canine patients.
This month, Dr. Brittany shares her recommendations to help you and your senior dog get the most out of veterinary visits.
What Makes Senior Dog Exams Different?
Just like people, dogs become more prone to disease as they age. Conditions such as chronic pain, cognitive dysfunction (dementia), cancer, and mobility issues become more common. Senior wellness visits often involve more in-depth discussions about your pet's health, additional screening recommendations, and accommodations for mobility limitations.
Because of these factors, senior pet appointments may take a little longer to ensure all concerns are addressed thoroughly.
Before Your Visit
- Write down any questions or concerns you would like to discuss with your veterinarian.
- Bring a complete list of all medications and supplements your pet receives, including brand names and dosages.
- Observe your pet's behavior before the appointment. Your veterinarian may ask about:
- Signs of pain (dental or joint-related)
- Behavioral or cognitive changes
- Vision or hearing concerns
- Changes in eating or drinking habits
- If you are concerned about your pet's mobility or behavior, record a short video to share during the appointment.
- Ask your veterinarian whether anti-anxiety medication may be beneficial. Many senior pets experience increased anxiety during veterinary visits, storms, fireworks, and other stressful events.
During Your Visit
BYOM: Bring Your Own Mat
Bring a favorite mat or non-slip bed from home to help your pet feel comfortable and secure during their exam. If you don't have one available, don't worry, we have extras here for your pet to use.
Bring Approved Treats
If your pet follows a special or restrictive diet, bring pre-approved treats so they can still enjoy positive reinforcement during their visit.
Bring Samples If Possible
- Urine samples should ideally be collected within 2 hours of your appointment.
- Fecal samples should be collected within 24 hours of your appointment.
If these samples are not needed, we will dispose of them for you.
Bloodwork Preparation
If bloodwork is recommended, ask whether your pet should be fasted beforehand or if testing should be timed around any medications they are taking.
What You Can Do at Home
- Provide an orthopedic bed and soft blankets for comfort.
- Place non-slip rugs throughout the home to improve traction and mobility.
- Keep nails trimmed and paw pad fur short.
- Ask your veterinarian whether an elevated food and water bowl would be beneficial.
- Use ramps to help your dog access furniture, beds, and vehicles safely.
- Most importantly, spend quality time together and continue enjoying your favorite activities.

One of the simplest ways to stay on top of your pet's health is to schedule their next visit before you leave the hospital. We encourage forward booking for all appointments, whether your pet is coming in for a wellness exam, vaccine visit, recheck, or senior care appointment.
By scheduling ahead, you can:
- Secure the day and time that works best for your schedule.
- Increase your chances of seeing the doctor you prefer.
- Stay on track with important preventive care and recommended follow-up visits.
- Avoid longer wait times during our busiest seasons.
- Ensure senior pets and those with ongoing medical conditions receive timely monitoring and care.
Towel Donations Appreciated
We are currently accepting donations of gently used towels and blankets. These items help us keep our patients comfortable during treatments, procedures, and recovery. If you have extras at home that you no longer need, we would greatly appreciate your donation.
Holiday Closure Notice
In observance of Independence Day, our hospital will be closed July 3rd through July 5th. We will resume normal business hours on July 6th. Check to see if you have enough food and medicine for your pet and request more if need be before the holiday.
